Edmonton Public Schools
Edmonton was the first school district in Alberta to actively engage in international work. In 1995, the International Programs unit was established to
develop and introduce an International Student Program and a Homestay Program, both of
which have grown steadily. Work is also done to facilitate student exchanges, develop
international partnerships with schools, and identify curriculum that reinforces international
perspectives and global topics. District staff have been called upon to provide advice and
direction on international education matters to Alberta Education, and to numerous districts in
Alberta and across Canada.
The district holds memberships in the Canadian Association of
Public Schools International (CAPS-I), the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE),
the Citizenship and Immigration Canada Advisory, and the Alberta Education International
Council. These memberships ensure participation in the growing international education
network across Canada.
Edmonton Public Schools has taken a leadership role in the province,
regarding international education. Public education and specifically Edmonton Public Schools,
has a significant role to play in producing younger generations of internationalists within a global
learning culture.
